Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe, is a land of wide, fertile agricultural plains. It is bounded by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the south and southeast, and shares borders with Belarus, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia.

Ukraine has long been known as “breadbasket of Europe”, because the country’s fertile plains, called steppes, are ideal for growing wheat. The country’s land is mostly flat, with the Carpathian Mountains in the far west and the Crimean Mountains, in the extreme south along the coast.

The capital, Kyiv, is the largest and the most populous city of Ukraine. Ukraine is home to several historical architecture complexes and famous catacombs, which are recognized by UNESCO. Two of them are situated in Kyiv - the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves).
